How Would You Fix This Neck Pocket?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi folks,

Apologies if this is a question better posted in the Setup & Repair forum, but can anyone make a suggestion on how to repair the cracks in my neck heel (See picture). Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks much,
J.

If those are not removable, glueable-and-replaceable chunks, I'm guessing the luthiers are going to suggest penetrating (thin, wicking) CA glue. Let's see.

Have you taken off the neck? If yes, do those parts of the pocket come out?

Oh, he beat me to it.

If they are removable pieces and have surfaces that meet with the pocket cleanly and evenly, I'd probably glue/clamp them back into place using something like titebond 1. Now that I think about it, I'm curious to know if those cracks terminate in any way at or close to the bolt holes...seemingly not on the surface side of the bass, but inside the pocket.

Sure it's not just the finish? Kinda looks that way to me.

Thanks!

I took the bass apart the other night and the whole pocket was still intact, i.e. no chunks, just cracks, so I tried some CA glue.

I wasn't sure what to thin it with, but the glue I was using seemed to flow pretty easily on it's own, so I used it undiluted. It seemed to wick into the cracks pretty well. Pictures attached. I'm thinking I'll sand the high spots flush where the glue built up.
