Idea for newbie project - what do you think?

Sign in to disble this ad
For my first bass project I decided to build a 5 string bass body. My idea is to use the neck and pickup from my 5 string OLP (stingray copy). I really like the sound of a solo'd jazz bridge pickup so I thought I'd go with that plus the OPL humbucker for the neck pickup. Here's the design I came up with:

I was going for something that would suggest both a Jazz and the MM look. Please let me know what you think.

I like it, you might want to make the contours more...countoured. It's kind of blocky

yeah, I fell like I could draw a rectangle around it with little white space showing around the edges. Not to be bashing your design, I do like it

No, I didn't take it that way. Thanks for the feed back. I'll put the rectangle around it and work on more white space.

Unless you want a vintage-ish style. It looks pretty "combo of P, J and MM" to me. And the blockier, the more old school look...

honestly I think it's hot how it is

I would certainly rock that bass

If you change it at all I wouldn't take too much out of it

Yea, the lower right part of the bass (butt?) needs a little more contour.

To get more of the Jazz bass feel?

I'm not big on the shape of the treble side horn (I like big blocky horns), and I'm not quite sure what the control plate/pickguard configuration is. I like the idea though, some of my favourite basses have been js at the bridge and mms in the centre position, having the mm more in the neck position should get you some nice bottom.

Yeah, I know. I unexpectedly came into the Jazz control plate and thought I'd try to fit it in to add to the jazz part of the theme. On the other hand I was trying for the Stingray feel around the the neck joint, neck pickup and down into the controls... oh well *shrug*
