Impact of moving neck pickup further down?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am soon going to start a bass building project and while I am getting my wood cut to the right size, I am also working on the design. I got a plan from member Yvarg that he used for his Rickenbacker 4005 copy which I am going to use, but he made it with a set neck and I would prefer to do a bolt on neck. Since the neck would then occupy more space on the body, the neck pickup would also have to be moved further down the body towards the bridge.

So my question is to you experienced builders: would it make a difference moving the pickup?

It will sound different.

Yeah, I guessed that one
But moving it further south would it make brighter, right? But what I really wanted to ask is, would moving it 1,5 cms further down do anything terrible or impede its function as the deep toned pickup?

Bingo.

15 mm won't affect it noticably enough.

And when you ply at the top couple of frets, it should actually make it bassier rather than brighter. The general idea is, closer to the non-vibrating stop point of the string = more high end.

I did the opposite, I moved a Precision split coil 3/4" closer to the neck, noticably warmer tone. Your tone will get brighter but may not be very noticable

To give your bass a Rickenbacker sound put the neck pickup where the 24th fret would be, and put the bridge pickup around 4 1/2" from the bridge which is the same harmonic as half way between 2nd and 3rd fret. Also make the body out of maple and use bubinga for the fretboard.
