Question j-style wood pickup covers?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all

Long story short - Warmoth sent me this nice Gecko body, flame koa on mahogany, but routed the pup cavities too large. Didn't discover this until Nordstrand delivered my pups, and I already had 14 coats of Tru-Oil on the body. Nordstrand, BTW, delivered exactly what they promised, no issues there.

So, what to do? I could hunt around for and wait for new plastic covers for the pups, or I thought I could make my own. Happened to have some mahogany lying around and some koa and wenge veneer, so I tried my hand at putting together some j-style covers that would fit the routes. I'm fairly pleased with the result, learned a lot along the way. I also put together some soap bar style covers, which are kinda cool, but I'd have to do some serious body routing, and I'm not crazy about that.

Anyway, having lost perspective, I'm solicting opinions on which you think looks better. Soo....?

BTW, two quick coats of Tru-Oil on each to show the grain.

Thanks,

Kev

wow, those regular j-style covers look awesome , you seldom see those, as opposed to soap-style which are all over.

I vote use the J-style ones!

Absolutely, without a doubt, the J style wins hands-down! That's going to be a beautiful bass!

Nope, solid wood, the whole thing. If I get a chance, I'll post more pics about the build, in case anyone's interested. Definitely a more difficult procedure than building the soap bar covers.

clasic shape! i attempted to make my own, with a failed result. this was mainly do to the jazz set being quarter pounders from basslines, and there is almost no room between the 2 pole pieces for each string. the wood didn't survive. my way of going about it, i thought was good. i took the original covers to my drafting class, and made a full draft of it, and marked the centerline, and its perpindicular. on the blank, i made a centerline and its perpindicular, and lined the draft up with it, and taped it down, drilled the pole pieces, and them routed them out. it should go smoother with the music man cover i will make.
