Looking for nitro finishing service in MI

I am getting close to finishing my neck thru 5 string bass and I need a source for nitro cellulose finishing. I live near Detroit and would prefer a source here in MI, but I am also willing to ship the instrument if need be.

This bass is constructed with a swamp ash body, center body laminate of purpleheart with a Nigerian satinwood top. The neck is curly birdseye purpleheart with 2 stringers of wenge and a center stringer of pau amarello. The fretboard is curly maple.

The bass will need the frets taped off and the nitro finish on all surfaces including the swamp ash electronics control cover.

Possibly Mike Koontz.
Ferndale, MI.
There's a guy around Big Rapids, I think, that does nitro but I can't remember his name.

Yes, Mike did the nitro on my first 2 instruments, however he is very busy and can no longer knock out a finishing job in under 4 months. I really need this work completed in 6 weeks or less.

6 weeks or less when Nitro takes 4 weeks to fully cure after the final coats are sprayed? You need to find someone with a spray booth, and absolutely nothing else to do.

The guy in Big Rapids is called Guitar Hospital I think.
He did a refin on a 65 jazz bass for Bassplayer magazine a few years back.
You might be able to google this and get his name and number.

That's Bryan Galloup

What are you trying to get done, just clear coat?

contact Elderly Instruments in Lansing, they'd likely know since they do a boat-load of servicing.

Just stay away from the store itself unless you're truly immune to GAS  ;)

Elderly's prices quell gas everytime I go in there....kind of like museum pieces and Sothebys prices.....LOL

Yes, just clear coat.

true dat, but they know their stuff, I've pinged them from out here in CA for info that seemingly no one else has.

Plus they carry those cardboard upright bass kits, they're great fun :bassist:

I would find a way to wait on Koontz. He is a busy man for a reason.

Freedok 03-01-2013 09:58 PM

Mike and I have been close friends since 78. He is too busy to do new finish jobs.

oleskool 03-01-2013 10:06 PM

Did you ask gordy's, right down the street? He will not do the job but may know someone.

Freedok 03-02-2013 08:19 AM

I forgot about Gordy. Thanks, I think I will do that.
