Making a bolt-on bass with little to no neck pocket.

I'm kicking around the idea of making a bolt-on copy of this bass.
The original bass was short scale, but no one makes a neck thru blank for short scale. I was thinking about using a Danelectro neck, and mounting it to a body. As you can see, there wouldn't be much of a neck pocket.

Will this present structural or neck shifting problems?

That neck joint kinda resembles an SG's neck joint.

If i were building this I would try to design a set neck joint instead of a bolt on.

The original bass was a set neck. I have never made a neck. If I knew someone who could make a 24 fret short scale set neck, I'd most likely buy it.

Do you have any other photos of that bass from different angles?

I'm not certain that neck joint is as small on the back as it appears to be.

I would also say that this might be a good opportunity to learn how to make a neck. You can get a pre-slotted and pre-radiused fretboard from LMII, and they offer 30" and 32" scale options. Then all you need is some maple (assuming you want maple), fretwire, and a truss rod.

I've seen your other threads, chief, and I have confidence that you can pull it off. Building the neck isn't even close to as hard as it looks like it might be. Buying a pre-slotted and pre-radiused board takes care of the two hardest parts.

There are more pics of the LoBue bass here.

What is LMII?

LMII is Luthier's Mercantile International, Inc.

http://www.lmii.com/

They sell luthier stuff...wood, tools, hardware, etc. They sell basically everything you need to build an instrument. Their prices aren't the best, and their selection of bass hardware is pretty limited. But they sell things that are hard to find elsewhere.

Found this picture on that site:

You can see (outlined in green) the silhouette of the neck joint. The blue line represents where the neck is set into the body.

So that neck pocket is pretty deep, as it turns out. It could be easily done with a bolt-on neck.

Edit:

Blue line was hard to see, so here's a Zoomed version.

If your question is, Is a neck pocket required to build a bolt-on instrument?, I think the answer is no. For example, a Danelectro Longhorn has virtually no neck pocket.

Plus the Dan has a shortscale, 24 fret neck. I'd have to cut off the wings of it's headstock to reform the new hedstock.. I just didn't know how important a neck pocket with sides is to structural intergrity of the instrument.

Plus the Dan neck I'm scoping has the trus rod adjust in the heel, which is more accurate to the original.

If there is enough wood to structurally support the tension, the neck pocket is not "required".

To illustrate the danelectro neck joint:

The sides don't do much, structurally...if anything.

Visit the axeology website. The string issue is addressed
