i've never built a bass before, but i'm about to try for the first time...i have some ok maple planks, but it doesnt seem like a very popular choice for the body...what would be the advantages/disadvantages (if any) of using maple as a body..wood? thanks.

Go for it! There're plenty of solid maple bodies out there. I've seen some gorgeous solid Spectors, for instance. About the only downside might be weight.
