Misc tools/jigs at Warmoth's on-line shop tour

Sign in to disble this ad
following a post from Brian in the scarf joint thread, I took opportunity to view the shop tour on Warmoth's site

http://www.warmoth.com/customerservi.../shoptour.cfm#

I thought I'd note a couple images that caught my attention

* tooling for thicknessing headstocks

* tooling/jig for carving custom neck contours utilizing an overhead pin router (whoa - look at those chips fly!)

* in contrast, utilizing CNC to carve the neck contour. Notice that the neck is pretty much complete at this phase

* a massive fretboard radiusing tool. notice that the fretboard is attached to the neck - just like I do them in my shop

things definitely have come a long way since I last visited the shop in the early 80's ... when neck contours were being carved using a set-up very similar to a duplicarver.

if you haven't viewed the tour before, it's definitely worth a visit. who knows what tooling you'll be inspired to build for your own shop

all the best,

R

Do you have a pic of your setup by any chance?

I have the radiusing jig detatched at the moment, as I've been working a batch of bodies the past couple of weeks, and I've been utilizing the belt sander for roughing the edge contours.

I should have it reassembled in about a week, as I'll be radiusing a new batch of necks. I'll shoot a couple of images and post them here.

all the best,

R

and that's exactly what I am using - I just thought it would be nice to have images of it in use vs a clean showroom stock image.

come to think of it ... I may have posted an image of it with a neck strapped on in the thread I have going about the single-cut progress

all the best,

R

Really?! I thought these would only be for fingerboads on their own.

How do you get the belt sander to not sand off the sides of your headstock when you tilt the jig on the two sides?

Hi Phil,

Here's what I had posted earlier in another thread:

I miss the headstock by assuring it's past the end of the flat bed - and remember that it is also either thinner than the fretboard (I reduce the thickness before radiusing the fingerboard) ... and there's even more room to spare if you utilize and angled headstock

I can shoot additional images in about a week ... let me know if you want anything specific

all the best,

R

I'm curious how you attach the neck to the swivel arm without having to put screws into what will become the finished piece?

lots of industrial strength double stick tape ... and not the puffy foamy black home use stuff either.

I've had beyond excellent success with 3M double stick carpet tape that is +/- 1" wide

edited to add that the horizontal bar is set-up to accommodate a vacuum system, should you happen to have such a system in your shop. I don't, so double stick tape it is.

all the best
