Modding Cheap Jazz Copy

Sign in to disble this ad
This is my first project!

I'm reasonable with my hands but never done this before, so what I'm planning is really a heavy modification rather than a build.

My plan is to get a Jazz bass copy, take it apart and build up a body from that, by gluing extra wood on where needed, removing it where not, to get the shape here.

Reshaping the headstock too to be telecaster + slight point.

May paint or get white PU covers and some oldschool knobs.

It's a combination of a Reverend, Rickenbacker GUITAR (the straight inner horns) and perhaps a bit of Italia thrown in.

I will make a new angular scratchplate and the paint the whole thing red.

What do you think?

Maybe you should start with a body blank.

Is that a body with all the routing done, ready to be cut out?

No, it's a blank rectangle if wood from which you can make a guitar or bass body. You would have to di all if the routing and shaping. There are numerous examples on here detailing the steps many of us go through, which you can freely use as a guide for doing it yourself.

The builders in this forum are generally very helpful when it comes to answering questions or demonstrating a particular technique.

So, grab a body blank and jump in! I'd recommend starting with pine or plywood to get a feel for things. Grab a 2"x8" board and make your own body blank.

Looking very 80s. If that's what you're looking for, go for it!

+1

My first build was a scratch build, and I gigged it last week. Admittedly it is not what normally happens, (to quote Mikeyswood: "It is a common misconception that your first bass will be playable")....I was lucky enough to find this forum at the beginning of the build. Look through threads, ask questions...make mistakes...but enjoy it.
