modding my precision bass... thoughts?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi guys. I've been gassing to do a project and i think my Matt Freeman Squier Pbass might not be a bad place to start. Im going for a beefier sound with a touch of high end and i want more growl to it. More than just adding a J pickup in the bridge. I was thinking of putting a humbucker right by the bridge.

After that, possibly adding an Aguilar OBP-2 stacked (bass/treble) preamp in place of the tone knob. but lets just focus on the humbucker first.

i want to install the humbucker by the bridge and make a threeway selector switch (think of the les paul toggle) to switch from P to P/H to H. The problem is, if i decide to do this, how would i make the room for a toggle switch and how would i make the path for the cables.

My gear right now:
Squier matt freeman pbass
Fender rumble 15.
(Yamaha bb300 defretted)

I just want the versatility without blowing a bunch of cash in an investment for a good amp. also, i dont want to buy a new amp since im probably gonna be outta the house in a year or two (finishing highschool ) i just want growl of a humbucker and a toggle swithc.

THANK YOU for all your help as this has been bugging me for a couple weeks and i don't want to do anything stupid. THANKS

Go to guitarelectronics.com, the diagrams there will show you what you need to know. Why not just run 2 stacked 500 K pots, this way you can have seperate volume and tones for both pickups, and room for your toggle too, then drill for a side mount jack and your off to the races. Also, you might want to center the HB where a traditional jazz pickup is centered at 31 5/8" from the front of the nut, as putting the HB right next to the bridge won't add anything other than thin sound, even more trebley than a jazz, by centering the HB at this measure, you get the response of the jazz with a little more beef from the the wider aperture of the HB covering the area of the string in front and behind a standard jazz coverage.
