Modifying a Basses String Spacing

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello,

I was wondering if it is possible to decrease the string spacing on a Fender Jazz. I have chronic tendonitis in my right hand and the string spacing on my current bass is too great. Would a good luthier be able to create another nut without affecting the overall tonality and functionality of the bass? Would a standard bridge accomodate this? Thanks much

Hi!
I think replacing the bridge with roller saddles for adjusting the spacing might be the solution.
If Im not mistaken ,Kahler produce one.
good luck!

Jazz basses already have pretty tight spacing at the nut; assuming you're right-handed, replacing the nut won't have much of an effect because the strings are held apart by the bridge closer to your plucking hand. Getting a replacement bridge with adjustable spacing, as Suresh suggests, is probably the better approach. You may, then, have to worry about the strings not being properly aligned with the pickup pole pieces.

Nuts are easily replaced and you could always get a Leo Quan bridge.
