I hope the project is a success. Hopefully it will off-set what is happening with Big Leaf Maple. It seems that there are a bunch of knuckelheads in the Northwest that know how valuable this tree is. But, unfortunately, these guys only know how to identify this maple, not how to identify a tree with the figuring that makes it so commercially desireble. Hence, They are cutting down scores of Big Leaf only to find out that the tree has little to no figure. I guess the problem is so bad, experts are saying that if "eco-terrorism" keeps up, it could put the sustainability of the Big Leaf in question. I saw this story on a national news show, but, can't find the link!
Here is a link to an NPR story about the same issue....Only this time the focus is on thieves that know what they are looking for and try to sell on the black market....I didn't know there was a wood black market!
