Multi laminate neck question?

Sign in to disble this ad
How much does the neck attribute to the tone of the bass? Would a 7 piece Wenge/Purpleheart laminate bolt on neck change the tone considerably to let's say a 7 piece Mahogany/Maple bolt on neck? Keep in mind everything else is the same (body, fretboard, pups, pre, etc...)

Yes, but how much really depends on how much mahogany is involved. Wenge and purpleheart will be bright like maple, so it's really all about the mahogany (which will warm it up some).

also, Wenge/Purpleheart, will tend toward darker overtones while still adding snap to the instrument.

The woods I chose were just an example. I was more curious as to how much a part of the overall tone the neck plays as compared to the fretboard, body, and tops.

Bolt-on it was, right?
Then I say, in that comparison, that the neck will be about 50%, the body with top another 30%, the body joint 19.5%, and the fretboard max 1%.
On a solid body, the top influence is marginal (usually 1/4" thick), the thicker they are, the more influence, of course. On a hollow body, the top will suddenly be the more influencial part, since it faces the strings and pups. The influence is also defined by the size and distribution of the chambers...etc.
But, the influence of the load carrying part of the neck is really the major part.

this is subjective......I have found the body of a bolt on to have more influence on the tone than that of the neck. I would say 40% body, 25%, neck, 25% pick-ups/electronics, and 10% other(hardware, finish, strings, environment, etc.) but as I said, it really is subjective.
