My 1st Annual (maybe) TB (unofficial) bass build Competition entry

Sign in to disble this ad
So I'm a participant in this: 1st Annual (maybe) TB (unofficial) bass build Competition and here is my entry so far.

Slab of mystery wood from an old desk, Affinity Squier P neck and tuners, 70's brass bridge, Carvin humbucker and some chrome knobs. Not pictured is the masonite I'm using for the top, pots and screws.

Cut, routed and rough edge sanded.

Beveled the edge of the headstock... the reason why will become evident later.

More to come....

Interesting choice to go without the middle reinforcement on that giant rout. I'm loving the body shape, though, and the use of what looks to be a pickup for a twelve-string guitar.

Thanks, man... I left out the reinforcement because I decided to not go all the way through the body and leave about 1/3 of an inch of wood for the back. Originally, I was going to do a frame with a masonite top and back... this just seemed easier. It's going to be super light.

The pickup was commonly used on Carvin's basses during the 70's and 80's on their LB series that you can see here: http://www.carvinmuseum.com/decade/79-basses.html

Oh that's awesome! I wonder what the reasoning behind all the polepieces was.

Making good progress, BTW.

It's a guitar pickup and much like a J pickup does for a bass, that pickup had pole pieces on both sides of the string (good for bending.)

With so many slugs so close, it probably has a very similar vibe to a blade pickup.

And the pole pieces are adjustable with an allen wrench.. like a DiMarzio or a Q-Tuner so I'll be able to raise and lower to get the best sound. I haven't heard the pickup yet, but I have high hopes.

Yup! Sounds like it'll be killer, just like the whole project!

Thanks, man.... I truly appreciate the kind words.

I got a little shop time in today...

Got my loose interpretation of "F" holes cut out..

And started on the arm/top contours. I left enough "meat" on the sides of the frame to make a significant contour without sacrificing the integrity of the glue join.

I'm going to paint the top and back in the light seafoamy color and the sides/contours in a darker green as seen on the headstock above.
