My entry into the 1st Annual TB Build

Sign in to disble this ad
I was looking around in the shop for items I could use to complete a build and come up with the stuff in the pics. I reserve the right to change my mind during this process, but all in all, will be fun.

So here goes: The thought is to modify the bass body to fit the acoustic top and bottom. Do some chambering before gluing the top/bottom. Route pup, control and neck cavities. Haven't decided on the pup yet. Repair as necessary for natural finish or, do complete paint job. Repair the poor defretting job on neck and add nut. That's all folks................ So far

Sorry for not updating since the original post, but I wanted to finish up my Fearful 12/6 bass cabinet build. I'm glad I did, as it sounds awesome as compared to other cabs I've heard. Here's a pic.

I worked on doing some body plugging today, still have to add some meat to the horns and reshape. Going to use my routing sled to reduce the thickness of the body next. Cutting out the chamber router templates is on another table to get done.

Forgot to add that I've have $00.00 buck in this thing. Also added the hair pic, just taken after my tail was cut off and sent to Locks Of Love.

Sorry guys, but I'm getting off to a slow start, due to other commitments, but I'm back to work. Some progress pics.

A little sled work to get front and back surface squared to the sides and plugs leveled to surface. Just used some maple and pine i had laying around. Next next is to do some chambering. Cost so far is still $00.00

Got going again after a few interruptions (building a 100 ft. retaining wall).

Got my routing template made for the chambering operation

Drilling out the excess wood

Routing went good, but needed a longer template bit or thinner router plate, to get the depth I wanted. Body thickness now is
1 1/8th"

Got some more progress pics fer ya.........

Gluing a 1/2" Baltic birch ply to build the total thickness with the top/bottom will be 1 11/16".

Routed the ply to meet the body shape

Removed bracing from the top/bottom and sanded flat

Glued the bridge piezo disk in place

Glued the top in place

Routed the neck pocket, glued neck piezo disk in place, routed the rear cavity.

Next process is to glue the back on, and shape the headstock, then get everything ready for finish. I still have $00.00 dollars in this build.

Sorry for the ignorance here, but does it have two separate piezos, or are they wired into one?

Wow Lon, color me impressed. That just looks awesome, what a cool idea.

This competition has really turned on the creative juices and is really inspirational. So many cool projects are coming to light. This one and moonshine's are my current faves.

I'm really diggin this comp. Maybe it should run quarterly instead of annually!

Yeah, there is two piezo disk installed, one sandwiched between the chambered part of the body and the top, under the bridge. The second is mounted in the neck pocket and is sandwiched by the neck. The plan is the put them on a blend pot.

Whoa! I wasn't checking this thread, but oh boy, I do like this bass!!

Clever, clever idea to glue the acoustic top in a chambered body.

I'm wondering how those piezos are going to sound like! Will you post soundclips?
