good choice...my dad has a dewalt radial arm that is nearly 40 years old has been used HEAPS and still works like a champ...

You're welcome make sure there's not too much side play as the blade cuts.

I also use a radial arm saw for this - I remove completely the blade guard and sight directly down the blade to line up a paper template like Phil uses. Clamp the board in place and saw away.

If I ever get into doing a lot of multiscale slotting I will probably go Phil's route with the MDF template and register.

This isnt the gigantic RAS that Dewalt is known for-those are great saws btw-this is a little 8"er light duty thing that would be worthless for cutting anything bigger than a 2X4. But because it is made for just an 8" blade, the 6" (I believe) fret slot saw blade will work perfect. And I dont need a 3hp motor to cut fret slots, so I'll be able to set this up to just cut fret slots and not feel bad about not using it for anything else. And I wont have to be always breaking down my jig either.

Aaaahh, I feel much better about myself now-thought maybe my good upbringing had failed, or something.

The same large conglomerate that owns Black and Decker bought out Dewalt years ago. The for real old Dewalts were very nice and were dead on. I have an older 8" and an older 14" GA model. Fortunatly all the conglomerate wanted was the name Dewalt, so they sold the equipment and molds for the originals to a new company called "The Original Saw Company" and you can still buy factory original parts for any pre-Black and Decker Dewalt. However after the conglomerate bought the name, they continued making radial arm saws, just different models...with B & D motors.
By the way, Phil, this is a really cool idea. I don't think I've ever seen a Metabo Miter saw, looks like a very nice one. Might I also recommend a Makita LS0714 7-1/2" 4 Pole Sliding Compound Miter Saw. You can set the depth of cut and it turns 6000 rpm with a 7 1/2 blade...so that means the quality of your cut is extremely good. I have several sliders and this one is, by far, the best one I've ever used.
