My finger board is ebony or ebonized?

Sign in to disble this ad
Long history Short:
Im building my first EUB and I bought a finger board from ebay from china, and he said it was ebony no stain,
ok so when I got the FB and I tried to clean it with alcohol and guess what, the towel got stain (black)!!! now thats ok the finger board is well made and thats my main concern, but nobody wants to play the fool
but last Sunday after gluing the FB when I was flushing it with a scraper I was waiting for it to reveal a clear wood color under the stain, but that didnt happen, now… is my FB ebony or is ebonized?

Looks like ebony to me m8.
The FB may have been polished or fine sanded during manufacture, so what you picked up on your towel was more likely to be fine ebony dust.

Some ebony isn't "black" as we normally are used to. So at times a little stain is added to darken it up.
But I might agree with scojack here.

^true.

You could have ebonized Ebony. Sad but Ebony has the expectation of being jet black. I prefer completely natural for my builds.

Well then I got a pretty sweet deal for my vendor in china, I dont care about 100% black ebony in fact like you guys I prefer the grain to show, the dust coming out the FB was black and it didnt show any lighter color under the surface, now he said that it wasnt stain... well may be a little who knows

Lol well I paid $90 because it was made for a five sting upright almost 2" at the nut,the normal 4's was $70. Well that was the best that I could found others ran for 200+ or 400+
