My first *cough ... build

Sign in to disble this ad
So, short and sweet,

I recently joined TB and have been fascinated with much of what I've seen communicated, and have barely scratched the surface. I'm particularly interested in all the building going on, and would just like to say how grateful I am for all the priceless information I have received off of other peoples sweat and kindling.

My name is Jeremiah, I'm from Traverse City, Michigan (about 20 miles south), and I'm looking forward to learning much more about the art of luthiery and hopefully, I'll be able to contribute some useful information someday.

Here's my first pic:

My first build is a variation on a fret saw jig I saw on a couple of threads, along with the obligatory celebratory libation pic.

Not much, but it's a start (the jig).

Cheers!

Good stuff. I look forward to seeing more.

Kudos on building your own jig. I went the lazy (and more costly) route.

Nice! Don't drink and slot. Just sayin'.

Is your username a reference to the car or the band? The band is one of my faves.

Cool. Looks like you've got the same saw as me too.

Brother, the cats around here make me want to try my hand at building, all the time. Congrats on making some dust.

Bookmatched some camphor burl for the top cap with a beat up table saw and a cordless sawzall. Followed up with a thickness planer and now they just need to be jointed.

I'll be using swamp ash for the main body wing core material. I'm still waiting for a Pao Ferro fingerboard to arrive in the mail so I can do a more complete mock up before making any further design decisions.

It's hard not to get to excited and go to fast. I think (hope) the biggest lesson I learn from this process is how precious patience can be. It's my nature to be a little impulsive...

Let's get drunk!

It's all about the simple stuff for number 1. I'll hit you up for some advice on a multi-scale for number 2 - if number 1 turns out to be playable that is.

I just realized the other pic of the top I posted was of the 2 outside surfaces of camphor. This looks a little prettier:

Pau Ferro - Kung Pao Chicken... got it.

This is my rough design template. Opinions?

Loving that camphor. The template looks nice. There's something that catches my eye as odd in the upper horn, like it's too narrow or too close to the fingerboard. Keep up the good work.

Nice to see another Clutch-loving, bass-building Michigan resident.

Are you getting your materials locally?

Just an opinion on the template for the body shape.
I think it would look a lot better if the upper horn wasn't so close to the neck and was a little thicker.
Once again completely IMO, it's you're build!
