My first bass, and possibly second

Sign in to disble this ad
Here we go, I got enough courage to post some progress pics of my first attempt.

My 35" scale fretless

Headstock is not done yet.

While I was discovering how to measure, cut, etc, I ended up with a second neck so I decided to make a second body for it.
I got a piece of slightly curly Jatoba for the top.

This one will be a set neck.

I stayed fairly concervative with the shape ( I think) just getting used to the process .

That shape is very pleasing, if conservative. Great work.

What's that fretboard made of? Looks nice. BTW, your floor is awesome. I'd love a bass made out of that.

The upper "horn" area reminds me a bit of a tele... I've always liked Tele's

That's some good lookin' wood you've got there, and your design looks reasonable, and also pleasing to the eye.

Can't wait to see more!

Thanks guys for encouraging words, You are absolutely right about Tele inspiration behind the shape. I really liked the look of the Jatoba with a bit of a curl or flame in it, perhaps not the wildest bookmatchet top but nice and with the maple bottom it is like vanilla / caramel and I am really enjoying working with Bloodwood, great wood, works easy and looks great.

Will be posting more soon.

Thumbs up Some progress here

Well I am back with some progress, I routed neck pocket, inlayed fret lines (for people like me) side dots and abalony dots, finger board radiused and lightly tapered for good low action.
I like the look og gold hardware on it. I haven't got my pickups yet , just waiting for a set from Nordstrand.

Below in one of the shots is my new bandsaw

Looks amazing! It looks like you could've fit in another 3 fret-lines if you wanted. Any reason you didn't? Can't wait to see (and hear) the finished product!

Tell wilser no. He has enough stuff already. Did you see his spray booth?

Very nice bass. The gold hardware is a nice touch.

I used Maple veneer

Yes I might still do that but I also was thinking of first positioning pickup right against the end of fretboard "a la Wilser" and then see if there is room for a logo or extra fretlines, so they may still be there, but I think it may be a cool logo place too.
