I'm working on my first neck right now. I've got all the cutting done and i made a trench for the truss rod and i believe everything it more or less set to go in.

any suggestions before i put it in and glue on the fretboard? It's my first one and a lot of work went into the fretboard and neck, so i'm a bit hesitant.

Another thing is, I've heard of putting something in the trench to prevent rattling, what do you guys use for that?

ANY suggestions on what to do and what not to do would be great!

I would suggest you put a dab of silicon sealer at the ends of the rod so as prevent any rattle.

Be careful not to get it in the threads, another good thing is to put masking tape over the rod and groove to prevent glue from getting in there when its time for the board to go on.

Don't worry, and have fun.........the carving of the neck is the best part!

If you haven't already....check the thickness of wood you have underneath the truss rod channel, and calculate how much you'll have when you shape the back contour (back of the neck). IMO you should try to leave yourself no less than 1/4" when you get the neck to final finished thickness.

FWIW, I like to sand my fretboard to final taper, and rough-cut the taper on the neck (to <1/8" on either side) before gluing the board to the neck. Then I'll rough out the back contour (7/8" roundover) without touching the taper, glue down the fretboard, and finally sand or rout the neck edge (using the fretboard as a template of sorts) to match the taper of the board.

Then finish the back contour by hand.
