My first scarf joint neck..???

Sign in to disble this ad
After I cut out the headstock, taking a closer look I notice that the scarf joint was right in back of the headstock …..and on the front of the neck, about where the 1st fret would be…is that right..??. (that’s where you see the purple mark). So here is my Q?? after carving out the neck shape would that weaken the headstock.??? Any suggestions would help..and another thing I need to “cut” off about ¼ of wood from the headstock, would I do it from the front or back of the neck..??? thank you

Looks a little crooked (or the line on the back is). You will still be able to shape the neck, think about this:
If the joint was 1/2 the headstock, it's still going to be thin regardless, besides, glue is stronger than the wood and the fretboard will strengthen it up even more from the top. BTW, what is the angle? Looks like more than 15 deg.
You can shave off your 1/4" from either side, but the question is are you putting a laminate over the front of the headstock? If so, take it off the front, so you do not increase the height, unless the extra height is no issue, It's a matter of what you want to do with it, it's your build just be sure to always plan ahead.

Ibanez has done scarf joints like this for a long time, you just won't be able to avoid the unsightly joint, from the back of the neck, although some people have found some genius ways of making it work.

.....thank you its the line that is crooked...and yes it is 15 deg... I looked at it and said the same thing.....if I put my protractor on to of the neck and angle it down.. its reads 15 deg...its (1" and 7/8) off the table..???. so Im going with that... thanks again.. I'll take it off from the back...
