My first self-build project

Hi,

I decided, sometime ago now, to embark on a new project to build a bass just the way i want it. I have spent most of the time so far getting my head around the electrics (opting for dual H PUP's each with a six way selector for the optimum coil control).

I am now starting to think about the parts to use and seem to be hitting some walls or at least going round in circles so would be really interested in hearing your thoughts and learning from your experiences.

Initially i was going to go for a traditional 4 string design. But then thoguht, i already have a 4 string, lets do something different.

I used to have a 6 string and found that I used the high C much more than the low B. So i started to think about using a 5 string neck and going with EADGC. I have read a few threads on this (many here) and it seems a feasible thing to do. Other than the expected bridge/truss rod adjusments I suspect I will need to replace the nut too.

I would be interested to hear about anyone who had to replace the nut and if there are any tips for fitting replacements (including making the fresh slots correctly).

My main stumbling block at the moment is the bridge. I have have played many different 4-string basses and always prefered the string through body setup (like i have on my current fender precision deluxe). After doing some looking around I found the Badass bridge range which seems to get some amazing reviews (plus they have Badass Bass written on them which just makes them infinately cooler than any other bridge ).

This brings me to the problem, only the 4-string Badass III seems to support string through (holes pre-drilled). The Badass V (5 string) doesn't appear to have this. There is certainly no reference on Leo Quan site to it having this option.

That being said I have seen some sites that sell them suggest that you can string through the body (Leo Quan 5-String Bass Bridges and Parts at Buzzard's Bass Guitar Shop).

Have any of you used these bridges and managed to get a string through setup? I am very interested in hearing how this would be fitted to achieve this. I did mail Leo Quan re this but as yet have had no response (this was some time ago now so given up hope on getting a reply).

Thanks in advance
