My Mørch bass -a work in progress

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi

I thought I'd like to share my Mørch bass project with you guys. Johnny Mørch is a legendary luthier, who've been making basses for 4 decades (sic!)

Bass is gonna be his classical "curl model"; 5 string, neck-thru, ebony fb (fretted), chambered mahogany body with flamed walnut top, RMC piezo, 2 custom pickups

Bass ordered medio may. ETA for bass: medio november

First, pictures of the neck :

(don't know how to make the pics bigger )

Prototype of custom pickup; polepieces does quite resemble a Nordstrand Big Single.
+Bass glued together

Wow! Danes always seem to have impeccable design. Just simply gorgeous!

Thanks, well i dunno 'bout that, but I really like his classical curl design, and didn't trust my own design skill (or lack thereof).

On his website morch-guitars.dk, there's a lot of examples of his builds. A lot of his customers have had him make their original designs, and the results are somewhat mixed IMHO.

Here's a couple of pics of the neck; sanding the fretboard, and inlaying the side positions markers.
The neck wood is maple with two wenge stripes.

I had never heard of Mørch, but that design is exactly what I've wanted in a custom bass. I can't wait to see how your project turns out!

BTW here's what I picked up recently: a Mørch fretless 5'er from the mid-to late 70-ties. Nice bass

Notice how the design has evolved. It's great to eventually have two basses built by the same man with 35 years between them!

Didn't realise he's still building, very nice, the man is a legend indeed (or rather his pickups).
Nice bass!

He still is, but plans to raising prices as well as accept fewer orders, a kind of semi- retirement I guess. He's 65 but still sharp and vital. (And a great guy)

Whats funny is that the bass looks like the 70's! I bet it plays like a dream. You should do sound samples of both for enjoyment as well as comparison.

Yeah, it really has that 70's thing down! It's a boat anchor, and the pup's don't really sit where I'd like them to (think jazz bass), but it really sings and is fun to play, as well as ergonomically right (besides the weight).

I'll post clips when the new one is finished medio november.

I don't think the one one the site is mine, but a twin of sorts.
I bought mine second hand just a couple of weeks ago.

Almost ready to lacquer, just a little fine sanding and masking missing.

Notice the backplates of mahogany, the same as the body.
The battery cover is held in place with tiny neodymium magnets.
