My Mesquite order just arrived

Sign in to disble this ad
I have been wanting to check this wood out for a while and I decided to finally go for it. I haven't seen anything new on it on this forum in a while so is anybody using it?

I got 2 huge slabs, about 70 lbs. I know some of it will be put to work in my smoker too.

My Wagner moisture meter is reading off the chart on it but it is so humid down here lately who knows. + the species adjustment book doesn't even list Mesquite.

I know the thread is useless without photos so I will try and get a few soon. I hope to get some fingerboards, tops and possibly neck blanks out of it. What have you all used it for? Thanks ...tom

Cool!!!, we've got tons of mesquite down here in Tx, its a real hard wood and should be stable if dried good.

I'm going to try it for neck stringers and fingerboards some day.

Birdsong Guitars uses it for bodys. You gotta post pictures when you use it Tom...

PM me if you have any that is ready for use now as fingerboards. I am really wanting to try it and it looks like it will be a few years beforel I can touch this. I have a daughter and son-in-law in Corpus and I saw loads of Mesqute trees there but the only time I saw it as lumber they were using it in a BBQ cook off. That made it some of the most expensive Q I have ever seen.

Yes actually I have used brown mesquite for a couple fingerboards. It is very dense and not too bad to work with.
But for me working with it, I didn't think it smelled like the mesquite chunks I have used on the grill though.

Good luck,
Dirk

dirk--can you recall if the mesquite fretboards sound similar to anything else you've used?

Unfortunately you're asking the wrong guy, it plays great has a cool look and was easy to work really considering how hard it is.
I will never believe a fingerboard has a sound, sorry.
