My neighbor just gave me some wood...

Curly Redwood that is. I heard he had some redwood and I am about to start a build project with my luthier, so I went to check it out. I figured that I would have to paw through a lot of boards to find something with nice figure and he busts out this stack of beautiful wood that has been dry for years and he picks out the best piece and gives it to me! I barely even know the guy! I live on my wife's family property (three houses and four generations here, currently) and have met the guy once. I am dying to see this stuff with a real finish on it!

Just thought I would share!

Buy that guy a case of his favorite beer, or if he doesn't drink, buy him dinner. That's a sweet chunk of wood! that would look amazing bookmatched!

Id definitely make it a one piece if possible. What are the dimensions? What are the sonic characteristics of the wood by the way.

Dimensions.

It is about 36"x11"x3/4" so no one piece unless I made it pretty skinny or left the hips exposed. Here is what it would look like Book matched.

As far as sonic characteristics, this is just going to be a top, so it shouldn't really affect the sound. Redwood is pretty darn soft though so I bet it would be dark sounding and not great sustain. Just my guess though.

+ 1million400billion. You must. That is amazing redwood. I wish you the best of luck on the build. Some guy a while back gave me the nicest piece of birdseye maple Ive seen in a long time, I gave him 2 neck blanks and set him up with 'lutherie classes 101'. It was a good deal. Great find, your neighbor seems to be a good guy, maybe I should come over with a case of beer too.. !! hhahaha

DOH!

I can't believe I missed that title!

I actually am baking the guy some serious holiday goodies (one of my other hobbies) and going to offer some landscaping in the spring. If I am really careful and a little lucky I might be able to get two tops out of this piece.

I have an African Mahogany body from Larry at Gallery of Hardwoods coming this week too. He is a great guy to work with.

I will start a build thread around christmas.

Cheers,

Coffee
