My ramp idea

Sign in to disble this ad
Tell me everything that might be good to do a nicely done DIY ramp, from the wood selection/where to buy (Canada) to the best way to seal it/finish it. I'd rather have a permanent way of fixing it as im not to fond of double side tape and velcros, but at the same time i don't want to harm my bass if I miss it

I did a quick search and found a build progress ramp thread but it wasn't to my taste, and ofc i found many people inquiring about where to get it done, but I'm more a DIY type'o guy.

The ditto bass is my schecter 6, the block will be 5,4x11.4x0.6 (metric that is)

Getting some1 to build it for me could actually be a good idea i guess, I did a draft in Ps to give myself an idea, It's a floating ramp has it uses the pups screws i think.

But now who would build that's not located to far away from me... i'd rather have it in plastic-ish like the pups, but wood would work to, idk enlight me

study gary willis and his technique and it becomes pretty obvious...it's about getting consistant amount of "purchase" from your fingers = consistant tone + speed

if you play with one, you'll discover it's not a "crutch"...

that's like saying that frets are a crutch...although, there are those who WOULD say that...

oh well...

i don't need to play with one. that's why i was considering it a "crutch".

Exactly my point...i don't need to play with frets, but I do mostly ...but don't NEED to...

a "crutch" is something you rely on to stand on...noone relies on a ramp...a ramp helps improve your playing (given the technique is suited to its use)...it's not a crutch...

so a ramp is a device to improve a specific technique...not a crutch...

IMO, a ramp replicates the end of a fingerboard on an upright..

it's not a "crutch" anymore than an amplifier is.. it's a different type of tool to allow you to play differently..

Nope... but if you like playing with one, it's pretty cool. If not, it's a useless ornamentation.

Like a lot of things, they're not for everyone.

I use mine and they work extremely well for me. I actually like the looks of most of my basses without them. If all I was doing was looking at them, I doubt I'd have them.

The effect is also like playing over your pickups, if they're set close to the strings. If it matches the curvature of the fingerboard, so much the better IMO.

If it helps for some to think of it as a crutch, cool. It's no more of a crutch than a strap. They're tools for making my job easier.

think of it as a thumb rest... or a cutaway(for the upper frets).... or a tremolo..

not everyone needs to use it but for those that do its very usefull.... It's a tool...
i think your brain might need a crutch....
