My second build, low budget creation

Sign in to disble this ad
This is my second bass build that I made for a friend. The bass is already completed but I took a few pictures

Basically this was a parts drawer clean out build. I bought the neck from guitarfetish. The body is one piece of poplar. Its got a MiM Fender P pickup, and a jazzbucker made from a Duncan SJB-3 quarter pound, and an SJB-2 hot. I flipped the q-pound over and ran the wires through the bottom.

Sorry for the crappy cell phone pictures

I tried and failed to use an old pick guard as a router template. Filled the hole with bondo. (most of it was routed back out)

Sprayed with automotive lacquer filler primer.

Pickups and control cavity routed

Automotive urethane finish applied. I stole Big B's idea for a spray jig

And the final product

I'm not really happy with the pick guard, I made a wood template and used a 45 degree chamfer bit on my router table. It didn't make a very clean cut, anybody have any advise for my second attempt?

Sweet build. Love the retro color scheme. The body shape reminds me of the old Mosrite basses.

Ya think??

Nice German carve there.
How's the balance? Looks like it might be a diver.

Nice looking bass.

For scratchplate bevels, I have a very low-tech but actually quite effective method, which is to finish the edge carefully using a hand-held sharp Stanley knife blade as a scraper. It's slow and laborious, but quite satisfying -and you can see and control exactly what is going on.

It has a bit of neck dive but its not to bad. I think some light weight tuners will get rid of it.

Ill give that a try. I was actually just thinking about getting a one ply piece of pg material and not worry with beveling it.

Very cool bass!
Reminds me of a Univox high-fly'er, an friend of mine has. I will bet Your's plays and sounds 100 times better than the Univox(short scale, ball bat neck, crumby sounding pickups). From what I recall that design does lend itself to be neck heavy. Some Light weight tuners, and/or relocating the strap button should do the trick.

Keep up the good work! Oh yea, Love that color.
