My very own bass design thread!

I thought i'd join the ranks of everyone on talkbass and submit my design

i'm thinking of:
burl body (don't know much about burl, hopefully you guys can help)
maple neck, pau ferro or ebony fingerboard (with gold frets)
and gold hardware
i'm very open to suggestions, it is my first design, and i am very willing to tweak it

let me start of by saying thats one hot design,

what are those black things where the bridge is supposed to be? might i suggest widening the upper horn and extending it a little bit, it looks a little neck divey, so you may want to keep as much mass as you can at the body

Great design! Some things to consider if you pursue building this design:

1. Try making a scaled drawing with proper measurements (with graph paper, if you have it). Start with the nut and bridge positions, then put in major fret positions (12th and 24th, if you want that many) and work your body design out from there. Also be sure to take widths into account, as well.

2. Make sure that the body design doesn't inhibit playability. The way the lower horn is now would prevent any access to the higher frets. As far as neck dive goes, try to have the upper bout end around the 12th fret position.

3. Think about the design from a construction point of view and consider any possible issues. Make sure your headstock leaves enough room for your tuners to fit on solidly, and keep your controls further away from the edge of the bass body. A good idea would be to draw the back of the bass body so you know where the control cavity and pick-ups will be.

I know I've said a lot...hope it's not too overwhelming. But this design could really be something good if you develop it. Let us know of any progress!

I think you'd probably be better off with a burl top and another wood for the bulk of the body. Burls are often not hard or solid enough to be a bass body, and a solid burl body is going to cost a lot more than just a top. You might also consider moving the neck, pickups, and bridge over towards the treble side some. It looks a little too far over to the bass side to me.

yeah, although burl is quite expensive,
i've been thinking about maybe getting a bubinga top for the horns with swamp ash for most of the body
