I decided to sand the laquer off of my geddy jazz and it fells much better
only problem is i got a bit carried away and rather than just flattening off the laquer i have gone down to the wood and now the maple is dirty
What do you guys reccomend
is there something i can apply to seal it

Cheers
Dan

I have not found any good way to clean/bleach the discolored maple. Maybe someone has an answer other than sanding down past the discoloration. A light coat of clear lacquer would be my choice to protect it further.

I have used a very strong bleach to remove stain from a maple neck. It was so incredibly hazardous and stupid that I won't tell anyone how to do it on an open forum. But it can be done.

Personally, I would sand it, and treat the back of the neck with a tung oil finish. I have used Minwax Tung Oil Finish. It seals the wood and gives a nice satin feel to the neck.

Or leave the stain there and call it a relic.

wipe on poly IMO, tung oil has to be maintained later on, which is good if you like the open pore feel of tung oil.

I like the feel of a tung-oil neck. Who cares if it gets dirty.

What you DO need to be aware of is that an unsealed neck can warp (that's why they are finished in the first place).

Here in SD, neck warping is not a common problem given the lack of humidity/temp change - but if I lived in... Boston, say - I'd keep my woodwork SEALED.

The best sealer - polyurethane. The most durable - polyurethane. The most trouble free - polyurethane. Want it satin, sand off only the gloss, not down to the bare wood.
Oil finishes look good, they don't seal very well, they don't wear very well, they do need attention occasionally. They are easy to apply.

ok im thinking to use a wipe on poly
but i have only gone through the original laquer between the 3 and 7th fret portion of the back of the neck so will i have to rub all the rest of the old finish off and start again or can i blend the new in with the old
