Neck Pocket Template Offset

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm having a neck pocket template "laser" cut by Guitarbuildingtemplates.com, how much of an offset should there be for the neck to fit snugly into the pocket?

Anyone use Guitarbuildingtemplates.com before?

Already tried the Search function and didn't come up with anything....

i use fractions of mm's to fit the neck in. any discrepencies can easily be fixed using sand paper.

remember, always sand the neck never the pocket.

Stewmac free info says work with the pocket not the neck.

I would probably sand the neck to fit a snug pocket.

Stew Mac's page also says their templates are 0.04" oversize.

I tried guitarbuildingtemplates.com for a custom neckthrough neck template. The guy was god awful to deal with and the template was basically worthless. The first one sent was totally worthless, being as he didn't follow the clearly worded AND numbered specs I gave him. It was almost impossible to get him to replace it. I wound up taking the time to make a proper one later without the help of the one he made. It was hardly worth the $30 I gave him.

I'd stear clear and just make your own out of thick MDF rather than the 1/4" masonite he uses.

if you sand the pocket, chances are you are going to distort the pocket tapering.

the neck can be replaced if it goes pretty bad. the pocket cant be replaced.

I understoud that if you built up the diameter of your berring and started with a slightly smaller route you could increase the size of the pocket until the neck fit. I would never try to sand a pocket larger but I would try to route it.
