Negative fret markers

I'm starting to plan my first build. On a fretted neck, instead of doing traditional inlay work would there be any downside to doing a slight negative relief carving? Just a thought right now.

You mean scooping the frets? It's done all the time on guitars. Billy Sheehan's custom bass from Yamaha has the top few frets scooped, as does Steve Vai's Jem, and a bunch of other famous shredders.

Good point. I completely forgot about scalloped fingerboards. From what I recall the purpose is for "digging in." What I have in mind would be purely for asthetics.

It'll pick up all sorts of crap, and you'll curse every time you clean finger scurf out of the crevices with a cocktail stick and cotton bud.
