New bass ?'s

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm almost done w/ a new bass. I was going to take pics for you guys tonite, but I got off work too late. I'll post pics tomorrow night. It's a fretless 6 w/ a brazilian walnut/brazilian redwood neck, mahogany and brazilian walnut body, and a bocote fingerboard.

My ? is about strings. It's a 30 inch scale, and I was wondering if I could get a good reccomendation for a 6-string set of flatwounds that will have good tension all around w/ the short scale. I mostly build regular guitars, so forgive me if this is a dumb question.

I'll post pics of the new bass tomorrow! Thanks in advance for the help!

I'm curious how people will answer this. 30" scale would tend to make it duller and -- lumpier, maybe, pick an adjective -- so a 30" with flats, going down to a low B, stands a possibility of being pretty muddy.

Thumpier.

a 30" 6er with flats? yes, pictures would be nice, but I really want sound clips!
As for strings, I've got nothin for ya. Try the strings forum, those guys are nuts about cables.

Here's some pics...
I still hope someone has some string ideas for me over here, I'll try the string forum too, which I didn't know existed. Bigger gauges perhaps?? Help, people!!

I finished the fingerboard w/ pour-on epoxy. It looks terriffic, but it's been 1 1/2 days, and I can leave a mark w/ my fingernail. The mark actually dissapears after a couple hours tho. I heard some epoxies actually could take many days to fully harden. Is this the case?? I hope it is..... If someone has any insight to that, please let me know.

Thanks!

I'll hopefully have the bass finished in a 2-3 weeks, and when I find the right set of strings for the job, I'll def upload sound clips.

I have used epoxy on several basses. System Three clearcoat and West System quick cure. I liked clearcoat better. It's supposed to be ready at 24hrs, I don't know the specs of your product, but after a day and a half and still gummy is not acceptable. I suggest you either check your mix (some epoxies have very critical mix ratio, that's why I switched from west system to system three brand, it's more forgiving) or change to a marine epoxy brand.

good luck.

Hey Dusty,
That's a good looking bass!

I think you might have to go the custom string route.
Quite a few manuacturers make short (30") scale string sets to conteract any loss in tension, however they all seem to be 4 string sets and in roundwound only, from what I've seen anyway.

I've got a 33" bass and I've been in touch with Malcom at Newtone strings, (http://www.dwmee.34sp.com/ - odd website name, I know) I'm afraid he's UK based, and he's happy to make up custom sets for any scale length. He might be happy to ship to you.
I used to use his strings a few years back and they where great.
Back then it was about £30 per set, that was for a custom guage 6 string set.

With regards to flatwounds, I'm not sure if he does them, on his site it says that they're not available at the moment.

Hope that's of some use mate!
Looking forward to seeing how it turns out!

Eude
