Are you going with that J shape, or like your first bass, or what? How about some specs!

This bad boy is going to get a dinky J-body (I've got "my" body shape set for the next batch).
A couple weeks ago I found two beautiful African mahogany slabs at Rockler for the low low price of $4 and, amazingly enought, they are exactly the size of the left and right body wing of a jazz bass, so I figured, why not!!! It's their DESTINY to become a jazz bass!
Haven't decided for sure on the electronics and pickup config, but I'm kind of leaning towards either a Music Man or P+J, since those are arrangements that I don't currently have in my existing instrument collection.

In the first pic I notice you haven't trimmed the painted end of one of the mahogany pieces; in several years's experience in cabinet shops we always trimmed the last 3-4" off the ends of boards to avoid splitting. I am NOT saying I know something you don't, but I have noticed end splitting on wood that had sat for a long time. If you need the full length of that piece you might watch for splits. Again- nice work so far.

I've also glued the laminated top about 1/8" over the edge of the mahogany to be cleaned up with a laminate trim for a perfectly flat surface to be joined.

Why this way? | In answer to your question, the body wings have been rough cut to shape first before being glued together as it is simply easier to me in handling the wings separately through the bandsaw shaping process. As you will see at the top and bottom edge where the wings join together, I will be going back for a final smooth pass on those parts once the wings are joined together.
The dowels are there simply for alignment during glue-up, a helpful alternative to biscuit joining which I have also used in my builds.

I haven't found anyplace other than Rockler or the Woodcraft by MSP airport to get exotic woods, so this place will be getting a visit from me in the next couple weeks!

Lonnybass | Darn it! I don't find many Pedulla players in Chicago.
