Wow, you weren't kidding! Reminds me of those tiny samples that travelling salesmen used to carry with them decades ago.

Seriously - what is the scale length for this nugget?

Scale length will be about 9 inches.

Everyone needs a GOOD travel guitar!
I made one with elastics for strings.... worked great for a week 'till the elastics stretched beyond logic :P
Good luck!
Looks like it'll be awesome so far!

Coolest until she says "what do you need another bass for?"

All good questions - I have to do some experimenting with my fretfinder to figure out what is going to be manageable. Of course, I could just get the little guy started on fretless...would save me at least a couple nights of work!

That's funny, I'm in the exact same situation: built a bass past few months and becoming a dad in the next month.. my wife (I didn't bring her on that idea, she came up with it herself) said: "maybe you could build a baby sized bass for our child next year".

So this thread is very funny and useful.. keep us posted

That's really cool, do you have a pickup in there? Is that thing fully playable?

My wife was intending for this to be a "toy" but it's taking on a life of its own in terms of realism (tt's also kind of wild to see my traditionally used body shape scaled down to a 1/4 size miniature).

This build is pretty wild.

Are you going to use a truss rod? I assume the tension won't be very great. Also, are you going to go with a lighter gauge string set?

Nope, no truss rod planned. And probably guitar strings.

This is a 21 inches scale 4 string "piccolo" bass (a polite way to say stringed with guitar strings...)

The pickup is home wound p-type under maple cover, wired direct to the ouptut jack.

100% fully playable. (I even played with it once at rehearsal with my band with an octaver pedal... )

Body and neck is 1 piece mahogany. Neck is topped with maple with walnut binding.

There's no truss rod in mine, but the neck seems to shift a bit with humidity changes and string gauge, so if one day I build another for my newborn baby, it will have some kind of trussrod. Also, even if string tension is not as high as a real bass or guitar, it affects the instrument. (take note the this one is a 1 piece mahogany neck/body and thickness is like 1 inch, maybe 1.25 max.... I'll measure tonight...)
