Neck is tapered. Don't you just want to give it a hug?

Thanks! Since these photos were taken the bass has been dyed a transparent blue and I have final sanded the neck. Next projects will be to get some guitar tuning pegs and a basic pickup, and to slot the frets.

I'm tempted to have my wife ask her grandma to knit a "gig bag" for it.

After all, she'll have the time...she's practically going to move in with us once the kid is born.

The body is actually about seven inches long and about five inches wide...kind of went back and forth on the dimensions but this seemed to be a good compromise.

Interestingly, from doing this project I don't think I will build new full-size instruments (other than those that use my typical LONNYBASS body shape) without doing such a miniature scale model of the design first. It has been extremely interesting to see how body edges, contouring, etc. will translate -on a small scale - into the final product.

So this is like a 14" scale, right?
Sorry if this has been cleared before (this is just really interesting for me)

No worries. The official working scale length is 12.5". I will be final sanding the neck and slotting frets on it tonight.

Well, the kid was born on 9/11/09 which temporarily took a good chunk out of my shop time. Since he wasn't sleeping more than a couple hours a night, my wife and I have spent most of our evening hours in a total fog of exhaustion - not the safest way to work with power tools. (I try to avoid working tired at all costs!)

But now that we're all starting to get a bit more rest overnight, I think over the coming weeks I'll be able to get some more time in on the babybass and its bigger brethren.

congrats on the kid! I have one on the way and your thread has me thinking about starting a "baby" bass myself. Hope you get some sleep soon.

Thanks buddy and congrats to you to as well. The sleep situation has not been ideal lately, that's for sure.

I did manage to spend some quality "escape" time carving a five-string neck about two weeks back when he was (temporarily) going four hours straight without waking up, but that's been it about it lately. Now, I go down to the workshop area and look around and think, I'm WAY too tired to use the drill press tonight...and I'm WAY too tired to do use the router tonight...and I'm WAY too tired to do dimensioning...and so I usually just wind up puttering around for a couple of minutes before retreating in defeat. Ah, fatherhood.

Enjoy it now! It won't be long when he asks for the keys to the car, a LonnyBass or two, your rig and then announces that he's going to go hang out with Prince for a few days!!!

Are all y'all headed down this way for Thanksgiving?
