Ibanez soundgear rehab project

Sign in to disble this ad
Alright, here's the deal........

I have an ibanez soundgear 855le from like '89 or '90 (can't remember exactly). it's a 4 string, but I've decided to convert it to a 5 string and borrow the nut width from a 5 string p bass (1.875”). Using a 4 piece neck, of poplar, ordered a dual action rod from allied lutherie (wanted to try something other than the hot rod) and depending...... I may use some CF rods. Glued the neck together yesterday, added extra to the headstock end (I'll use a headstock design I drew up 4+1). Once i get the neck all glued up, I'll sand down the body and take it from there. I'll post a few pics shortly (although not much to show right now.

Truss rod should be in this week. Gotta decide if I want to put a top on the body (If I do, i'll match the headstock). I guess i've got time to debate that some or, i'll just get it sprayed. Also because i'm converting it to a 5, I'll need to decide on a bridge as well.

Ordered this bridge in black:

and one more gotoh style tune, since I already have 4.

Indeed. I had done it on my EUB, at least 2 pieces were poplar, 2 cherry and a 3/8 piece of teak for that neck lam. Poplar was used partially in the neck lam on my headless too. It will be interesting.
still mowing over the idea of getting two cf rods, just in case.

I would, or lam in some purpleheart or something similar.

I never used it for a neck wood, but the bodies Ive made are pretty soft.

How are you going to make the joint at the heel?

I could potentially change it around just about any way I like, seeing as the neck will be wider, the pocket does too.. I didn't 100% understand what you were asking initially, but it'll remain a bolt on.

Sorry about that, I was wondering how you would shape it to fit properly.

Not a problem, I may use the same shape as the previous end, the pocket will just be widened a bit.

This sounds like an interesting project Jason! I'll keep my eye on this one!

What was the wood used in the original neck?

I agree with PasdaBeer about Poplar being soft, but I bet the CF will be a good solution.

Original neck was maple,IIRC. I don't know about poplar being *really* soft, granted not nearly as hard as "hard" maple, but I've rebuilt some couches that were all poplar frames, man they can take some abuse and weight too, so there is *some* strength to poplar, but CF rods would probably be a good idea as well. It will also be much stronger than a 1 piece neck though.

Well, then again, if it don't work so well, I won't sweat it, I'll just build another one out of other woods, I'm just biding my time until I have all the pieces for 2 guitar builds i'm waiting on.

But how will you retain the shape of the end on the new neck is what I wanted to know.

I'll have to scale it a bit bigger.

I feel really stupid, lets give this another go.

How will you match the shape of the pocket onto the neck, even with widening it, so it fits perfectly?

By making a jig, my good man. Once i've made the shape on the neck, the jig part is pretty easy from there.
