Alright, here's the deal........
I have an ibanez soundgear 855le from like '89 or '90 (can't remember exactly). it's a 4 string, but I've decided to convert it to a 5 string and borrow the nut width from a 5 string p bass (1.875”). Using a 4 piece neck, of poplar, ordered a dual action rod from allied lutherie (wanted to try something other than the hot rod) and depending...... I may use some CF rods. Glued the neck together yesterday, added extra to the headstock end (I'll use a headstock design I drew up 4+1). Once i get the neck all glued up, I'll sand down the body and take it from there. I'll post a few pics shortly (although not much to show right now.

Gotta decide if I want to put a top on the body (If I do, i'll match the headstock). I guess i've got time to debate that some or, i'll just get it sprayed. Also because i'm converting it to a 5, I'll need to decide on a bridge as well.
Ordered this bridge in black:
and one more gotoh style tune, since I already have 4.

still mowing over the idea of getting two cf rods, just in case. |

I never used it for a neck wood, but the bodies Ive made are pretty soft.

What was the wood used in the original neck?
I agree with PasdaBeer about Poplar being soft, but I bet the CF will be a good solution. |

I agree with PasdaBeer about Poplar being soft, but I bet the CF will be a good solution. | Original neck was maple,IIRC. I don't know about poplar being *really* soft, granted not nearly as hard as "hard" maple, but I've rebuilt some couches that were all poplar frames, man they can take some abuse and weight too, so there is *some* strength to poplar, but CF rods would probably be a good idea as well. It will also be much stronger than a 1 piece neck though.
