NEW project: Bass VI custom!

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok, my S.I.L. is a great classical guitarist but is very frustrated and wants something new and more suited to her. So we talked specs today and the plan is to build a Fender bass VI style bass with EADGBE tuning, but a little heftier. She wants a Hipshot to go down to D. I was initially thinking 30" but maybe 32" would be better. I'm gonna use these tuners and bridge. Any comments would be great...

What do you all think?

p.s. will 1 trussrod be enough? I thinking fender style neck with a skunk stripe.

The original Bass VIs only had one truss rod. Remember that truss rods are not there to strengthen the neck, only to make the relief adjustable (read as: it will be fine with one). Make sure to post lots of pictures, I'll be watching this one with great interest as not a lot of people seem to make Bass VI styled instruments. Oh, also those tuners and bridges should be fine. If I remember correctly the strings have bass ball ends rather than guitar sized ones.

No, it's full custom aside of the tuning. The body is going to be flower shaped and it's copping a MM and a J PUs.

Here's a concept shot of the bass. Sorry it's in pencil and it's a 5 string but its the rough idea I started with. My S.I.L. loved it at first glance.

You could convert a Daisy Rock 4-string bass easily enough, then if she likes it, go full custom.

rough mockup on Google sketchup...

Re the daisy rock; Thanks beeTL, but I they don't balance properly and the whole bass is gonna be totally different once you get beyond the short scale flower concept.
