New Sheridan Five-String: Camphor Burl

Here' s the latest. This one is a refinement of the Bastogne Walnut build. A bit narrower in the body and shorter overall. The neck was also scarfed for the first time.

Camphor Burl top
Lightweight Mahogony core
Bubinga back w/continuous control cavity cover
Sappy Bubinga fretboard. (Thanks, Ericbojeric)
One-piece Shedua neck with Camphor headstock.
Nordstrand DC5s (Series) /w matching wood covers
East U-Retro 4-band EQ.
Gold ETS MKIII bridge
Gold Ultralights
Camphor knobs

Most of the roughing out is done. I'll get down to the shaping in the coming days.

Man thats a sweet looking bass. I really love the way that neck looks. What kinda properties does sedua have, tonal and physical. Is it easy to work?

Thanks. It's similiar to bubinga. Not too heavy. Nice to carve. Hates going through the planer as I got lots of tearout.

nice one, Luke!

tearout of figured woods is why I bought a Performax 22-44 thickness sander. since then I rough the thickness at the bandsaw and then clean things up with the drum sander. no more tearout

all the best,

R

Sweet! Cool color combo from a cool selection of woods.

But man, you gotta upgrade from that camera phone (or whatever). Show that puppy off right!

Hey luke , How'd that first scarf go?
its realy easy! they are right!

and you can use 4/4 wood instead of 6 and 8/4!
if you use 8/4" and it glues clean you can get 2 blanks!

as a matter of fact, you can get more than one neck from a thick enough blank. If you start with say, 5 pieces of 4/4 that are 6" wide, you could lay out the cuts so that the neck blanks, including the angled headstock without a scarf, so that you can get 5 or 6 necks. 3 with the headstocks on one end and 2-3 on the other end.

Here's an ascii diagram to illustrate (sorta):

I recently discovered that I've got a mega lumberyard near my house that has beautiful stuff.
