New source for body woods and exotics

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey everyone,

I am just letting you know of another source for body woods and exotics. I have been working closely with this supplier to bring in more musical grade lumber since they are a pretty big supplier of other types of lumber. Recently they purchased a good amount of Genuine Honduran Mahogany from a mill that had Gibson sort it. Gibson was unable to purchase it so My supllier got it. This wood is all sorted for Les Pauls but why should they get all the fun
Check out the links and pics. They will get other stuff for you too. Just ask them. BTW, if you mention my name you probably won't get a discount but it would make me feel good LOL!! The C-grade is actually premium grade.

Here are the pics

Hope this helps with the search for woods,

I've heard great things about Keim lumber. They are a little drive northeast of Columbus, but I may have to make a trip out that way now. =) Thanks for the info.

Ahahaha it's a small world. I go there.... like every 2 weeks.

They can cut any size you want. I once went and needed a large piece of mahogany and they didn't have it in the show room. They took me out towards the mill and they brought a fork lift with huge slabs of mahogany on it. It was good stuff. I got to pick what I wanted and they chopped off about a foot because of a crack.

I love that place. The guy at the mill and the exotic wood shop know me by name!

hey Tom, that is because they are all 14wx20lx1-3/4 thick. These were cut especially for Les Paul blanks. You can get 2-pc body wood or body blanks any size you want them. They have all kinds of other woods to choose from.

Depends on what your looking for really. I just got a great piece of Bocote from there. The prices are really good, check them out here. I haven't seen everything they have but a couple pieces were......well to say the least "eye catching".

There is a bass in there? Or are you talking about the picture? There is a picture of an Alembic on that little stand in the center with all the weird stuff.

I noticed recently they started getting buckeye, of course no burl yet though. If they started getting buckeye burl... I'd lose my mind and every dollar I make. I was thinking about calling and trying to get a hold of someone important to ask if they may consider doing that. They'd make business.

They have started more acoustic stuff too since I've been buying from there. I remember when they first had acoustic guitar sets, then they started carrying sitka spruce.

I was thinking about going next paycheck to see if I can grab a decent piece of macassar ebony or some african blackwood for a fretboard, so I'll be there soon!

Yeah, next to the pic of the alembic there is one of mine too. I told them what grades were needed for body woods after going there and sorting thru lift after lift for decent alder. I hope they will bring more stuff in for all of us.

They do have some really nice blackwood. I was checking it out. Might have to get some and see how it works compared to Mac ebony.

The blackwood will definately be in that catagory. I have some katalox too that I have been waiting to try. The blackwood seems like it will be very similar to gaboon ebony, which can sometimes be very brittle and unstable so I hope the blackwood is better in that regard.

Pete...you have Katalox as well! I am really interested in this as a fretboard (and possibly a body facing) on a custom bass or three. I have been interested in Katalox for a few years, but I still have not found much information about it.

Basically it is going to be very much like ebony in weight and density. It will work great for a fingerboard providing you want the same characteristics as mac ebony. As for a top, it will add some compression to the mix so don't use it with other really dense woods unless you want to get more compression out of the bass. Thats just my experience so far. It is a great substitute for ebony but it is also hard to get good stuff suitable for instruments. Make sure you know what your getting before you buy it.

Pete,

Thank you for sharing your insight. I really respect your opinion, and I look forward to seeing (hearing) what you do with this particular species of wood. You make some fantastic sounding basses, and I am certain that your use of Katalox will be as easy on the eyes as it will be on the ears.
