Newbie Question: Wipe on poly over Mighty Mite neck?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello, newbie looking for a little advice:

Bought a Mighty Mite J neck (maple with rosewood fretboard) to go on my P bass. There is a thin satin coating on the back of the neck & the headstock; I'm not sure what it's made out of.

My plan was to use 4-5 layers of minwax wipe-on satin poly on the back of the neck to help protect it. Is the wipe-on poly compatible with whatever that thin stock coating is?

I used it on a MM neck and it worked fine.
I added a few drops of MinWax "Golden Oak" stain to it and it gave a great vintage look. Just practice on some scrap until you get the color you want.

Thanks for the advice. May I ask how specifically you applied the stain to the poly/neck?

I mixed it in a separate graduated container and used a eye dropper for the stain. I would put about 1 1/2 oz of Poly and 2 drops of stain, mix it up and wipe it on. The container I used had a snap on lid so I could get 2-3 wipe downs out of it. That was good enough for one day. I ended up with about 12 coats when I was done. After about 5-6 coats I would give it 48 hours to completely dry and then hit it with 0000 steel wool to smooth it out. It is slow going but worth it in the long run

Thank you for your help. Per your advice, do I have the routine right?

(Optional) Pre-mix stain and poly in a container with lid to hdracer or other specs.
1. Mineral Spirits + rag, wipe down neck
2. Tack cloth to remove dust from neck.
3. Tape up fretboard
4. Rub on poly with lint-free rag/old t-shirt, waiting 2-3 hours (per manufacturer's specs) or till poly ostensibly dries between coats.
5. After 5-6 coats (or however many), wait 48 hours and then sand with 0000 steel wool (to remove uneven buildup, nodules, dust, etc?)

In my research, I'd seen comments about wet sanding poly. I may skip the step if it involves too much complication or margin for error. Thoughts?
