Newby advice needed

Let me start off by saying that really appreciate the things that I've learned here. I have a little experience with wood working (though it's been awhile)and would like to build my own bass. I have a design idea completed, but I would like to do a practice run first. At this point I only plan to do a body. I have a donor bass in mind for the neck, electronics, ect, that I will use for the real body. What I want to do is make a body from a blank just to practice. This will also give me an idea of what the completed body will look and feel like. My question is, what would be a good CHEAP wood to work with? Like I said, I don't plan for this to actually be used for an actual bass, just a test/practice run.

A lot of people use pine for tests. I'm not a luthier. Just a frequent lurker.

Pine if you can find some good flat stuff, if not, use MDF or plywood, both will serve the same purpose, and if you like the completed shape, you can use it as a routing template for the real build

I stopped by Lowe's a little while ago. Saw some pretty good looking Whitewood (basswood), cheap too!.

I've done poplar and pine. Wear a mask with poplar, it sands kind of fuzzy and I ended up being allergic to it.

The pine looked good too! The whitewood had alot less knots though. Thanks for the heads up KHG.
