not again! finishing a fretted board

I have a few Warmoth necks that have the frets already installed, but they are unfinished. I usually use wipe-on poly for the necks, works great for the back for a super hard and smooth coating. However on the maple fretboard, it looks bad, the lint and dust no matter how clean or lint-free the cloth or towel is, accumulates near the frets. I would like to do them over with spray-on poly but the question is:
How would you sand this out without hitting the frets while sanding along with the grain? I tried with rigid pieces of sandpaper, a small blade but I still cannot clean or remove the finish next to the frets.

thanks

using the sharp edge of a folded wetsand paper (220 or higher) should get nice and close to the frets; sanding inbetween these small areas is hassle for everyone, you got ta find somthing that works; its basically impossible to go with the grain on anyhting up past the 12th, but sand with lil circles as opose to back and forth or trying up and down (length/grain wise) that will keep the scratches random enough they arnet noticably going against the grain
