I ran across a store called woodcraft yesterday while I was on a trip. They had EVERYTHING. I had so many visions and fantasies of basses I could build, but their prices were kinda high and my wallet was kinda flat.
I did buy a little block of wood that I found interesting
I figured it would be good for a valentines day present for mary ann.
Sorry if it was inappropriate to post here, but I wanted to share with you guys even though it wasn't bass related. At least the metal loop for a chain is made from piece of an A string, lol

I honestly wouldn't have been able to do some of what I did without them. It was either them or pay way too much for shipping from Europe, and that'd be after searching for months. Woodcraft is a little pricey, but I think they are more than worth it.
As for the chunk of wood you've got, It could also be what I've seen on their turning blank shelves as black and white, or marble ebony. Actually, in looking at the pic again, marble is probably out of the question.
Still, I cannot recommend Woodcraft enough! |

I do buy most of my wood from Kettle Moraine Hardwood, but I have bought from all three. Woodcraft usually has high prices, but this is offset with sales. For instance, Pale Moon Ebony is 30%off list. I almost got a piece just to have it! The location near me is selling out all of the CMT router bits at a heavy discount. They also sell Lie Nielsen handplanes I have a serious weakness for nice hand tools.
And Woodcraft has a great return policy if something were to go wrong.

I love them. As for wood, I'm stoked to live close enough to a place called Berkshire Products who has an amazing selection and pretty decent prices. |

I dunno, I want to see it, hold it, check it in person. I'm sure there are many credible people, but I can't imagine there aren't some shady characters as well. Besides, I know I need some odd parameters met, so I like to find things in person. Nothing like being late for whatever else you meant to do that day because you're pondering over a stack of wood you love. Well, sure, ok, I knew this girl once.......... |

Then again, maybe because I'd be like the guy buying Ritters Diamond/gold/etc million dollar bass to play Adam Clayton basslines, behind a stage screen, and through too many effects processors. |

| | | | Well, the technique I used is pretty ghetto. I'm on disability so money for tools is just not there. I cut a square of the wood with a 5 dollar harbor freight coping saw and marked the center. Then I used a sanding drum in my drill press to round it off. Then I used a mandrel from a buffing wheel and bolted that to the ring, and chucked it in a drill press and sanded it down to the outer diameter I wanted and shaped the edges.
Then I made this crazy "jig" out of a couple1x4s to hold the ring while I bored out the center to the biggest bit I had, which was about 4mm smaller than what I needed. So I wrapped an old drill bit in sand paper and bored it out further. Frome there, progessively finer grits of sandpaper wrapped around my pinky to smooth up the inside. Then finally put a buffing wheel in the drill press and polished the outside.
The heart was a LOT easier, lol
Although I did CHEAT on that, I didn't have anything to hand shape it with (no I don't even have any files) so I shaped it with the sanding drum in the drill press

I dont have the cash to get a nice expensive gift, but i can sure get by on scrapwoods!

| | | | That sounds like it will be really nice. I would have liked to have done something similar but don't have the skills for that
As far as the size, I'm not sure how they measure it, I just borrowed one of her rings and used a caliper to measure it inside
