Inspired by Rickett Customs fretting sticky, I took the plunge and went the drill press route, with a Grizzly benchtop model and the stewmac fret cauls.

Now for some practice before I put this baby to work!!

My $0.02, FWIW: Get or make a block of wood that is the right height to support the drill press table from beneath while pressing frets.

These tables, especially on smaller machines, are not always designed for much weight or pressure.
The frets will go in more accurately and it will all feel a lot more solid.

If you really want to get fancy, cut or route the top of the block so it fits up to the bottom of the table casting.
Shim as needed to adust for table height.

But, if you don't want to get fancy, even a piece of 2x4 wedged in there, so there is direct support beneath the quill, will seriously improve matters.

Congrats on the new tool!

Next purchase...sanding spindles? Those are fun...

Cheers,
Martin

Next purchase is simple. Lumber. Lol. And a bunch of odds and ends, of course. But yeah, spindle sanders are on the list.

I'm gonna try what you said to help support the table, good idea. Thanks.
