Nut/Binding issue...

I have an "allparts", jazz neck, with binding, and no nut installed...

The nut I have is a 1.5", pre cut nut which wont fit into the nut slot due to the binding installed...

Would you guys recommend trimming the bottom sides off of the nut so that the top side would fit over the binding???

OR...

would you recommend trimming the binding so that the nut fits across the nut slot and through the binding...

I have seen jazz necks with both styles...

My concern is that the finish will "chip" off in other areas if I remove the finished binding...

Suggestions??? Recommendations???

I would trim the binding. My reason for this is that if you trim the nut, it may be very difficult to remove for replacing (as the nut is usually removed from the side).

would you suggest scoring the binding with a razor/xacto knife???
I have some needle files to finish up the rough cut...

Let's say he trimmed the nut, leaving the binding intact to look nice and not disturb the finish. If he needed to replace the nut later, and it was too difficult to remove with the binding there, couldn't he just score and remove the binding on one or both sides of the nut at that time?

so it looks like i might be better off trimming the $2 nut as opposed to scoring the $250 neck...

it looks like i would need to trim off a 1/4" depth and between a 1/16"-1/8" from the sides...

would this best be done with a razor blade and needle files???

Well...
Finished trimming the sides of the nut last night...
I used a 1/4" piece of poplar with some 400 grit paper draped over the top and side edge...
I marked the nut with the xacto knife and sanded it down to the depth and shape to overlap the binding...
Using a flat needle file, I sharpened up the cornering and sanded the nut flat on both sides to fit it into the cavity...

There is an extremely small gap on the "E" side of the nut, but am confident that this can be fixed with a little "CA"...

Here is a picture of the shaped nut...
you cant really make out the E side, as the shadow masks the appearance, but overall, I am pleased with the result...
when I get the body and theneck alligned, I will have some pics to post of the finished nut/neck...
