nut change?

Sign in to disble this ad
i have a squier VM p bass and my local luthier told that a cheap upgrade could be change the nut.
but will the nut change all the notes? or just the open notes?, i dont imagine the nut affecting the fretted notes, but does it also affects playability?

The type of nut doesn't affect playability if it is cut correctly. That should be job 1.

Sound/material wise, it only affects the open notes.

Also check to see if the slots are spaced evenly from string to string.

i dont need to worry about quality or price, but i just need to know if it worths the time
bone is a cheap material here, and luthiers dont charge a lot for his kind of job (10$ with the nut included)

It won't change the sound much, except possibly on open notes, but it can help with playability, especially when playing notes on the first couple frets. It can also help with intonation, because the strings don't bend as far.

However, that's more to do with how well the net is carved than what it's made of, and in a lot of cases the existing nut could fairly easily be adjusted (sanded down, or slots deepened.)
