Nut Job

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys - I'm going to setup a 34" scale 4banger for ADGC, and was wondering the best method for widening the nut slots evenly from the centerline of each slot. Would using drill bits (of the appropriate sizes) as a file work? Any suggestions

Would you use a 130 OR 135 OR 140 for low "A"? I'm using 70 / 90 / 110 for the other three.

Thanks guys

A little piece of very fine sandpaper wrapped around tiny drill bit can make a good file. Be very careful not to take too much off though. 130 should be fine for a low A on a 34".

That's what I was thinking - I definitely don't want to remove anymore material than necessary - thanks

i hope i can use that trick on my 8 string. do they make drill bits the size of guitar strings? will this work on brass? i will be using a zero fret, so the slots just need to hold the strings

What about using short sections of old roundwound strings as a "file" or would that take forever?

It's a plastic nut BTW

that's great for burnishing the slot..you can get a nice finish with this technique.
You can superglue the piece of string to the edge of a popsicle stick. makes the perfect burnishing tool.
A tip from Dan E.
