Odd "french polish" mesh surface?

Sign in to disble this ad
(....as one of my friends used to say:"...-OK,is it either French,or Polish?...or a dictionary, perhaps?")
Here's the issue:
I'm currently working on refinishing two basses (one mahogany, the other maple, both well Tung-oil impregnated and left to cure for about 6 months).I choosed to work with shellack because I know how to do it,I like the feeling and look,I'm not afraid of such a job and I'm not time-pressed at all.
I remember that some time ago and just ocasionally,I saw some instruments (violins, violas, cellos) having a wonderful "meshed" texture instead of the common moderate or high-gloss finish. This looks like someone put on the freshly-applied shellack some squared mesh (and later got it off) with a pattern having small (1,5-2mm) squares.Of course, the surfaces I talk about were very well buffed as the overall look was a high gloss but on a closer look, the squared patterns were clearly visible.A long ago,I was talking about this with the Music Academy's luthier (I hanged around in his workshop for years, during my studies and after) and I vaguely remember that he said that this is no "corrected mistake",despite of the ignorant belief and this is done by the means of "something" thrown in one of the gross layers...but I just can't remember anything more.
Does anybody seen such a finish?
Does anybody know how's done?
Thank you!
Regards,

Yep,I wish that too...
I'll try to contact one of my ex-coleagues,a cello player who had (and supposedly has) an instrument finished that way, maybe he can shoot a few snapshots.
Regards,

Lots of my students obtain that look unintentionally when they allow their application pad to stop while in contact with the surface to which they are applying shellac; the alcohol evaporates so quickly that an imprint of the fabric is left in the freshly-applied finish.

If you want to achieve such a look deliberately, try several different kinds of fabric while applying shellac to your test pieces to determine which one will deliver the appearance you're trying to achieve. The extent to which the underlying shellac has cured will also determine the extent to which the fabric will imprint the surface.

If you want the fabric texture to be visual, but not tactile, allow the imprinted shellac to dry completely before you continue to apply french polish "correctly."

Good luck!
