Odd parts tricks

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all you luthiers,

as a noob builder, I'd like to ask a bit of advice from you guys. My biggest question is where does everyone source their hard to find parts from? Screws, bolts, springs, etc. can all be found online or at GC locally, but is there a better place, like certain hardware stores or hobby shops?

I know local luthier Dave King uses hobby plastic for lining his fretless basses, and thin black plastic sheets can be used to differentiate body layer laminates (only if you don't have any wenge laying around to slice, of course), what other tricks do you guys use?

One thing I would like to know is where one can get a hold of the tapered machine screws and nuts like Alembic uses on their pickguards/cavity covers. Seems like a GREAT idea to me not to be ruining the wood every time you needed to open her up.
