Is it OK to remove the cloth from the bridge end of a string?

I have one of the ETS piezo bridges and with the cloth on the strings it limits the amount the bridge saddles can be moved because the ends of the strings are so close to them. The red lays on the saddles. Will it cause problems for me if I remove the red "cloth" or thread from them?
